How do I bring my data over from Rize?

Goal

Bring your Rize history into Mac activity, assign the Rize projects, and catch up on new entries later.

Before you start

Steps

  1. Settings, Apps & services. Type Rize in Search for a service… and tap the row. Enter the key in the Rize API key (optional) field of the Rize card. Nova stores it encrypted.
  2. Settings, Work time, tab Mac activity. The Mac activity card has the section Import Rize history. Without a Rize key it is missing.
  3. Read Rize history. Nova fetches the time entries month by month, up to yesterday, and shows the month it is reading. Cancel stops the reading.
  4. A preview follows: how many entries, from when to when, and how many days Nova skips because the Mac already has its own data there. Nothing is written yet.
  5. Under Assign projects each Rize project has a menu: an Existing project, Create new, or No project.
  6. Import. Nova asks “Import Rize history?”. Only Continue writes the entries. They appear in the time ledger as the device Rize, in the Macs menu.
  7. Later: Catch up on new entries fetches only entries since the last import. Re-read everything replaces all Rize entries and asks first. Remove Rize data deletes the imported entries after a question. Created projects stay.

Example

Read Rize history, assign the projects, Import and Continue. Then choose Rize under Macs in the time ledger.

Common problems

  • The section Import Rize history is missing. No Rize key is set, or the view is Simple.
  • “Rize data could not be read.” Usually the key is wrong or Rize does not answer. Rize’s own message follows in brackets.
  • Days on which this Mac has at least 30 minutes of its own data are not imported. Mac activity counts there.
  • Nova searches backwards until six months in a row are empty. Entries before such a long gap are not fetched.
  • Imported Rize days stay until you remove them. The retention for single blocks in Mac activity does not apply to them.
